The Unexpected Object: Metamorphosis
And so, the metamorphosis is complete–what happens next? What does it mean to re-enter the world as a new version of ourselves? What should we carry with us or leave behind? Consider the dragonfly, as Cartier did in 1953.
The act of transformation itself is precious: from legs to wings, earth to sky, from platinum and gold, emerald, diamonds and rubies to a triumph of savoir-faire. The final form is exquisite; the bold colors of the body make an ephemeral beauty eternal, while the wings keep a sense of the ethereal. The dancing light of the fancy-cut diamonds is enhanced further still by their trembling setting; it allows them to vibrate and shimmer at the slightest touch – perhaps they’ll decide it’s time to fly.
